Persatuan Genetik Malaysia :: Message from the President

The Persatuan Genetik Malaysia (PGM) traces its roots back to 1994 through an initiative by a group of plant and animal breeders. Later, its membership broadened to include other important expertise areas, namely microbial and human genetics.  Then, we became affiliated with the International Genetics Federation and with COSTAM.  Since its formation in 1994, PGM has grown steadily in membership, presently with over 300 members.

The Society strives to further the science of genetics by holding biennial Congress meetings,  public lectures, scientific seminars, workshops and training

courses, and publishing  proceedings & bulletins.  Through these activities, the Society continues to promote the advancement of the science of genetics in the country.  The public lectures on topical issues held in conjunction with the annual general meetings at various institutional locations have also been popular. These activities have provided opportunities for members to regularly meet and interact, and they have become important occasions to attract new members.

Communication among scientists and members is vital part of the advancement of science. And as a continuing effort, the Society publishes its Membership Directory and its PGM Bulletin regularly.

Previously, four consultative working groups (CWG) were established, namely on plant genetics, animal genetics, human genetics and public awarenes, charged with providing a framework for exploring and identifying important activities in those areas.  This was done in order to faciliate the widest possible inputs from all segments of the membership. As a major organisational procedure change, these four consultative groups were amalgamated and streamlined into one consultative working group starting in 2009.

I hope all these activities will strengthen the core areas of the science of genetics as well as promote the convergence of genetics and new sciences such as genomics.

PGM has an enormous reservoir of scientists of different fields of genetics to discuss actual issues and problems to gain useful results for Malaysia.   I am convinced that that members will strive to give their precious time and contributions, invaluable ideas and inputs for the Society.  I leave the Society in your hands for its continuing vigour and success.

Salam and thank you.
