Professor Dr. Mohamad bin Osman is currently a Professor of Plant Breeding & Genetics at the Faculty of Plantation and Agrotechnology, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). He is a plant breeder and geneticist by training, and holds a Diploma of Agriculture from College of Agriculture, Serdang, a B.S. in Agricultural Genetics (High Honors) and M.S. in Genetics from the University of California, Davis, and a Ph.D. in Plant Breeding and Genetics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prof. Mohamad graduated Phi Kappa Phi from University of

California, Davis and was awarded the Knowles A. Ryerson Award in Agriculture for Outstanding Foreign Students by University of California, Berkeley. He served in agricultural research for 18 years with MARDI, predominantly as a rice breeder, and had held various positions in the Institute; as Head of MARDI Research Station (1979-81), Deputy Director of Rice Research Division (1988-90), Director of Fruits Research Division (1990-1994), and also Deputy Director of Basic Research Division (1994-1995). In 1995, he joined Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) as an Associate Professor in the Department of Genetics, and later served as a Professor in the School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences at the Faculty of Science and Technology. In 2010, he joined Kulliyyah of Science in International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Kuantan, where he was instrumental in developing the new Plant Sciences programmes. Since 2012, he serves in the Faculty of Plantation and Agrotechnology, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). His research specialises in plant breeding and genetics of rice, roselle and stevia. Previously att UKM, he specialized in breeding and genetics of rice and roselle. In 2009, UKM launched the three new roselle varieties UKMR-1, UKMR-2 and UKMR-3 developed through mutation breeding. At IIUM, he initiated the stevia breeding research for the country. In 2012, when he joined the Faculty of Plantation and Agrotechnology in Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), he actively continues the research on stevia. Over the last combined 18 years with UKM, IIUM and UiTM, he has provided academic and research guidance, and supervised 4 Post-doc fellows, 15 PhD., 38 MSc. and over 77 BSc. students, both from local and international. To date, he has produced more than 200 publications. Through his research work on rice, roselle and stevia, he led his research teams to win recognition and awards at national and international levels. Over the years, he has contributed significantly towards the Matriculation Programme of the Ministry of Education, for more than 10 years since 2001. In 2005-2010, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Malaysia appointed him as Chairman of the Genetic Modification Advisory Committee (GMAC). On the international scene, Dr. Mohamad represented Malaysia in many international meetings and conferences. He is a founder member of the Genetics Society of Malaysia (PGM), and Malaysian Society for Horticultural Science (MSHS), and had served as the Honorary Secretary for Malaysian Society for Applied Biology and for MSHS. He was also the Regional Secretary for Malaysia for Society for the Advancement of Breeding Researches in Asia and Oceania (SABRAO). He is presently the President of the Genetics Society of Malaysia.
